How Much Should I Pay for PPC Management in the Chicago Area?
PPC management in Chicago is usually 10-20% of ad spend or a flat monthly fee. What each model costs, what should be included and the warning signs.
There are two separate costs in any PPC campaign: the ad spend that goes to Google or Microsoft, and the management fee that goes to whoever runs the account. Owners often compare agency quotes without separating the two, which makes a cheap quote look expensive and an expensive one look cheap.
What do agencies charge for PPC management?
Most agencies use one of three pricing models.
A percentage of ad spend is the most common. Published rates usually fall between 10% and 20% of monthly spend, with the percentage dropping as budgets grow. On $3,000 a month of spend, a 15% fee is $450.
A flat monthly fee is common for small and mid-sized accounts. Agency pricing pages put it anywhere from about $500 to $2,500 a month, depending on the number of campaigns and platforms. Many agencies set a minimum fee whatever the spend, because a small account still needs keyword research, tracking and weekly checks.
A hybrid model combines a base retainer with a smaller percentage above a spend threshold. It is more common on larger accounts.
Some agencies also charge a one-off setup fee for building the account, the conversion tracking and the first landing pages. That is reasonable if the work is real. Ask what it covers.
How much ad spend does a Chicago business need?
Ad spend is driven by what clicks cost in your category, and Chicago is not a cheap market. Most small to mid-sized Chicago businesses spend between $1,000 and $5,000 a month on ads, separate from management. Categories like legal and roofing can see $40 to $80 a click for their main terms, so they need the upper end of that range before the data means much. A category where clicks cost $5 to $8 can learn a lot on $1,000.
The useful way to set a budget is to work backwards. Decide how many leads you need, estimate your conversion rate and cost per click, and see what that implies. Our SEM budget page walks through that calculation, and the SEO vs SEM guide covers how to split money between paid and organic search.
Which pricing model is fairest for a small Chicago business?
Each model has a weakness. A percentage fee rewards the agency for raising your spend whether or not that spend is working. A flat fee can lead to an under-scoped account if the fee is set too low to cover the work. A hybrid can combine both problems if the threshold is set badly.
For most local businesses spending under $10,000 a month, a flat fee with a clearly written scope is the easiest to judge. You know what you pay, and you can check whether the listed work is happening. On a percentage model, ask the agency what would make them recommend lowering your budget. A good one will have an answer.
What should be included for the fee?
At a minimum, PPC management should include:
- Keyword research and match type choices based on your services and area
- A negative keyword list that is reviewed weekly
- Conversion tracking for calls and forms that has been tested
- Ad copy testing and landing page recommendations
- Location targeting set to the areas you actually serve
- Reporting on cost per lead and leads, not just clicks and impressions
The negative keyword list is the item most often skipped. Without it, a share of the budget goes to searches like job listings, DIY guides and supplier names that were never going to become customers.
What are the warning signs in a PPC proposal?
Be careful with any proposal where the agency owns the Google Ads account. You should own the account and give the agency access, so the history and data stay with you if you leave.
Other warning signs are long minimum contracts, ad spend paid through the agency with no visibility of what Google actually charged, and reports that show clicks and impressions but never cost per lead. A guaranteed position on Google is also a red flag. Nobody controls the auction.
How does Pro Rankers price PPC management?
We don’t publish a fixed PPC price, because the work for a single-location plumber and a multi-location law firm is very different. Our pay-per-click management is scoped after a free analysis of your market, your current account if you have one, and what a lead is worth to you. Management is scaled to your ad budget and the plan runs month to month.
We also tell people when PPC is the wrong spend. If your cost per click is high and your landing page converts poorly, fixing the page usually does more than increasing the budget. The free business analysis will show which applies to you.
Does it cost more in the city than in the suburbs?
Often, but not always. Competition is usually heavier for searches inside the city, and a location target around the Loop will usually pay more per click than one around Joliet for the same service. Suburban campaigns can be cheaper per click but have fewer searches, so they need longer to collect enough data. If you serve DuPage County, our Naperville PPC page covers how those campaigns differ.
