Keyword Ranking Check Chicago, IL

Googling yourself gives a misleading answer. How to run an accurate keyword ranking check for Chicago, from Search Console to location-based grid checks.

The quickest way to check a keyword ranking is to search for it yourself, and it is also the least reliable. Google tailors results to where you are, what device you use and what you have searched before. An owner searching from their own office in the West Loop sees their business near the top, while a customer in Edgewater searching the same words may not see it at all.

An accurate keyword ranking check for Chicago needs a fixed location, a clean search and, for local results, more than one point on the map.

Why does searching Google yourself give the wrong answer?

Location skews a self-search more than anything else. For any search with local intent, Google uses your device’s location to choose results. In a city as dense as Chicago, moving a mile or two can change the map pack completely.

Personal history also matters. If you have visited your own website many times, Google may rank it higher for you than for anyone else. Private browsing removes some of this, but not the location effect.

Results also differ between phones and computers, and between the map pack, the regular organic results and any AI Overview at the top of the page. “Where do I rank?” can have three different answers on one results page.

How do you check rankings with Google Search Console?

Search Console is free, and it shows how your site actually performed in Google search. In the Performance report you can see each query that brought up your site, with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Filter by query, page, country or device to narrow it down.

Average position is an average across every search where your site appeared, from every location. A position of 8.4 can mean you rank third in some neighborhoods and on page two in others. It is good for spotting trends over weeks and months, and poor for answering “where do I rank in Logan Square?”. Search Console also covers organic results only, not the map pack.

How do you check local rankings for a specific part of Chicago?

For a one-off check from a specific location, the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool inside Google Ads lets you preview results for a chosen location and device without affecting your ads. It works even if you are not running ads, as long as you have an account.

For anything regular, a rank tracking tool is more practical. Good ones let you set the location to a ZIP code or a specific point, check mobile and desktop separately, and track the map pack separately from organic results.

For map pack rankings, a single check is not enough. A grid check runs the same search from dozens of points across your service area and shows your position at each one. The result is a map of where you appear and where you don’t, which explains far more than one number. Our page on accurate rank tracking in Chicago explains the method in more detail, and our post on why your Google Business Profile stops working three miles away explains what the grid usually shows.

Which keywords should you check?

Check the searches that bring in work, not the ones that feel prestigious. “Chicago plumber” is hard to win and broad. “Water heater replacement Lincoln Park” or “emergency plumber 60614” are closer to what customers type when they are ready to call.

A useful list for most local businesses has 15 to 30 keywords: your main services, the same services with the neighborhoods or suburbs you target, and a few question searches your customers ask. Group them by service so the results tell you which parts of the business are visible.

What should you do with the results?

If you rank well near your address and fade a mile or two out, the problem is proximity, and the fix is local relevance: neighborhood pages, reviews and citations. Our local SEO service focuses on extending that radius.

If you rank in the map pack but not in organic results, the website is usually the weak point: thin service pages, slow loading or technical issues. That is the job of our website SEO service.

If you don’t rank anywhere for a term, check whether you have a page about it at all. Often the answer is no.
